Pacha Pakku, also spelled Pacha Paaku, is the Tamil trade term for Raw Green Fruit — the unripe Areca fruit as harvested directly from the palm, before ripening or drying.
Pala Pakku, also spelled Pala Paaku, is the Tamil trade term for Ripe Yellow Fruit — Areca fruit that has fully ripened on the palm, turning yellow to orange before being harvested.
Vara Kai, also called Vara Pakku, is the Tamil trade term for Sun-Dried Ripe Fruit — ripe Areca fruit dried in the sun, the stage just before dehusking into the final nut.
Vella Pakku, also spelled Vella Paaku or called Chali Pakku, is the Tamil trade term for the final dehusked, dried Areca nut — the finished product also simply called Chali.
